Emergency Dental Care Explained

Emergency Dental Care Explained
Emergency dental care covers any oral health problem that can't wait for a scheduled appointment. A knocked-out tooth, a cracked filling, sudden swelling along the jaw, or pain that keeps you up at night all qualify. Infections can spread quickly, and a fractured tooth left untreated for even a day risks deeper damage. Our team at Muldoon Dental Arts reserves time specifically for urgent cases so you can be seen the same day the problem starts.
When you arrive, we start with digital x-rays to see exactly what's happening beneath the surface. That imaging, paired with a hands-on evaluation, lets us build a clear picture within minutes. The goal is always to save your natural tooth when possible, calm active infection, and stop the problem from getting worse. If you need root canal therapy or oral surgery, we can often begin treatment that same visit rather than sending you home to wait.
Types of Dental Emergencies We Treat
Dental emergencies rarely happen on a convenient schedule. Here are some of the most common urgent situations we treat at Muldoon Dental Arts.
Severe Toothache Pain
A toothache that throbs or keeps you awake usually signals decay or infection deep inside the tooth. We find the source quickly and relieve your pain, often the same day.
Knocked-Out Teeth
A knocked out tooth can sometimes be saved if you act fast. Keep it moist and get to us quickly. We have the best chance of replanting it within about an hour of the injury.
Broken or Chipped Tooth
A cracked or chipped tooth can expose sensitive layers and hurt with each bite. We stabilize the damage and restore the tooth, sometimes placing a crown during the same visit.
Lost Filling or Crown
A filling or crown that falls out leaves the tooth open to damage and sensitivity. Bring the restoration with you if you can. We recement or replace it to protect the tooth.
Abscess or Infection
Swelling, a lasting bad taste, or a small bump on your gums can point to a dental abscess. This infection won't clear up on its own and can spread, so we treat it right away.
Soft Tissue Injuries
Cuts to your lips, gums, cheeks, or tongue can bleed heavily and feel alarming. Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze on your way in. We clean and repair the tissue for you.

What to Expect During Your Emergency Dental Visit

The moment you arrive, our team focuses on pain control first. We assess the situation quickly, take digital x-rays to see exactly what's happening beneath the surface, and stabilize the problem so you can start feeling relief right away.
Before you leave, we walk you through clear aftercare steps and map out any follow-up visits you may need, like a crown or root canal therapy. Most patients notice steady improvement within a few days. If anything changes, reach out so we can adjust your care.
When I say that going to the dentist, even at 63, is brutal. It is the attitude of dentists from the past that makes many people feel discouraged. In less than 24 hours I had an appointment and the staff was fantastic. I was impressed. Not often in 2025. Much appreciated.
Dr. Anderson and Dr. Chad are amazing, as well as all the staff members who make you feel like home. I needed extensive work done due to many years of anxiety and resisting going to the dentist, but they made me feel so comfortable and at peace during all the procedures I needed. Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve answered the most frequently asked questions to help you feel informed, prepared, and confident before your appointment.
My tooth got knocked out, what should I do right now?
+Pick it up by the crown, never the root. Rinse gently with water, then try placing it back in the socket. If that's not possible, tuck it between your cheek and gum or drop it in milk. Call us at (907) 865-8488.
Should I go to the ER or a dentist for emergency dental care?
+An ER can manage pain and infection but usually can't repair teeth. We can splint a knocked-out tooth, treat fractures, and start root canal therapy the same day. Call us at (907) 865-8488.
My toothache stopped. Do I still need emergency dental care?
+Pain that fades on its own can mean the nerve has died, not that the problem resolved. Infection may still be spreading beneath the surface. We recommend coming in quickly for an exam. Call us at (907) 865-8488.
How can I manage tooth pain and swelling at home before my appointment?
+Apply a cold pack to your cheek in 15-minute intervals and take ibuprofen as directed. Avoid heat, aspirin directly on gums, and very hot or cold drinks. These steps help until we can see you. Call us at (907) 865-8488.
How fast can Muldoon Dental Arts see me for a dental emergency?
+We reserve time in our Anchorage, AK schedule each day specifically for urgent cases. Most emergency patients are seen the same day, often within a few hours of calling. Call us at (907) 865-8488.
