What are Dental Sealants?

Back teeth have deep grooves that trap food and bacteria no matter how well you brush. Kids and teens are especially prone to decay in these spots because the pits in newly erupted molars are narrow and hard to clean. Dental sealants are thin coatings we paint directly onto those chewing surfaces, filling in the grooves so bacteria can't settle in and start a cavity.

The process takes just a few minutes per tooth. We clean the surface, apply a mild conditioning gel, rinse it off, then brush on the sealant material and harden it with a curing light. There's no drilling, no numbing, and no discomfort. Once in place, a sealant can protect a tooth for years, working alongside regular cleanings and daily brushing to keep decay from getting a foothold.

Who Benefits from Dental Sealants?

Children between six and fourteen are the most common candidates. Those back molars that erupt during grade school have deep grooves where food and bacteria settle fast. Even kids who brush well can miss those pits. We often recommend sealants right after a dental exam confirms the permanent molars have fully come in, so protection starts before decay gets a chance.

Adults benefit too, especially if you still have cavity-free molars with naturally deep fissures. Teeth that have stayed healthy deserve a layer of defense to keep them that way. Our team at Muldoon Dental Arts also sees good results for patients with dry mouth or enamel that wears quickly. Dental sealants work well across age groups, and the process is quick enough to add onto a routine visit.

Benefits of Dental Sealants

Dental sealants give teeth a physical shield right where brushing and flossing have the hardest time reaching.

  • Grooves Sealed in Minutes

We paint a thin resin into the deep pits of each molar, then harden it with a curing light. It takes just a few minutes per tooth, and you walk out protected the same day.

  • Years of Quiet Protection

A single sealant can guard a tooth for up to ten years. We check every sealed surface during your routine exams and touch up any worn areas before they turn into a real gap.

  • No Shots and No Drilling

Placing sealants is one of the gentlest things we do. There is nothing to numb because we remove no tooth structure. Most kids and adults barely notice the appointment at all.

Advanced Dental Sealants Technology

The sealant materials we use at Muldoon Dental Arts are a generation ahead of what most people remember from childhood. Today's resin formulations bond more tightly to enamel and resist wear from chewing forces far longer than earlier versions. They flow into pits as narrow as 0.1 millimeters, reaching grooves that a toothbrush bristle physically cannot touch.

We also use magnification loupes and high-intensity LED curing lights during placement. The loupes let us confirm every groove is fully covered before the material sets, and the LED light cures each sealant in about twenty seconds, locking it firmly to the tooth. During your child's exam, we evaluate which teeth would benefit most and can often place sealants the same day.

YOUR VISIT

What to Expect During Your Visit

We start by cleaning and drying the tooth, then apply a mild conditioning gel to roughen the chewing surface just enough for the sealant to grip. You won't need a shot or any numbing. The gel rinses off in seconds, and we paint the liquid sealant into the grooves of each tooth. A curing light hardens it in about 20 seconds per tooth. The whole visit usually wraps up in 15 to 20 minutes, even if we're sealing several teeth at once.

You can eat and drink right away. The sealant feels smooth, and most patients forget it's there within a few hours. During your regular dental exams, we check each sealant for wear and touch up any spots that need it. Sealants typically hold up for several years before they need reapplication.

Before Appointment

  • Brush the chewing surfaces of the teeth getting sealed so we can bond the sealant material directly to clean enamel.

  • Skip sticky snacks like caramel or taffy for a few hours before your visit so no residue sits in the grooves we need to seal.

  • Mention any tooth sensitivity or spots that bother you when chewing, since those grooves may need extra attention during placement.

After Appointment

  • Skip sticky snacks like caramel, taffy, and gummy candy for 24 hours so the sealant can fully harden into the grooves.

  • Run your tongue over the sealed teeth after eating. If a sealant feels rough or seems missing, let us know so we can reapply it.

  • Brush the sealed molars normally, but switch to a soft-bristled toothbrush for the first day to avoid scuffing the fresh material.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve answered the most frequently asked questions to help you feel informed, prepared, and confident before your appointment.

  • Most sealants hold up well for five to ten years. We check them at every exam, and if one starts to wear thin, we can touch it up in just a few minutes.

  • Adults benefit from sealants too, especially on molars that have deep grooves and no existing fillings. Age is not a disqualifier. If the tooth surface is healthy and cavity-free, a sealant can protect it.

  • The coating is extremely thin, roughly the thickness of a coat of nail polish. Most patients forget the sealant is there within a day. Your bite should feel completely normal once the material sets.

  • No. Sealants shield the chewing surfaces of back teeth, but they do not cover the sides or spaces between teeth. Daily brushing, flossing, and routine cleanings are still necessary.

  • In some cases, we can place a sealant over a tiny spot of early decay to stop it from progressing. The clear material lets us monitor the area visually at future visits without needing to drill.

When I say that going to the dentist, even at 63, is brutal. It is the attitude of dentists from the past that makes many people feel discouraged. In less than 24 hours I had an appointment and the staff was fantastic. I was impressed. Not often in 2025. Much appreciated.

Dr. Anderson and Dr. Chad are amazing, as well as all the staff members who make you feel like home. I needed extensive work done due to many years of anxiety and resisting going to the dentist, but they made me feel so comfortable and at peace during all the procedures I needed. Receiving care here truly was felt with the utmost love and care. Because of my experience here, my dental anxiety has immensely decreased. Truly happy with everything regarding my care here.

I am honestly so grateful for the way I was treated here. Everyone was super friendly and made me feel comfortable right away. They were very thorough and took the time to explain everything in a way that actually made sense to me. Even when they had to give me bad news, they handled it so gently and compassionately. It is not easy to find a place that combines professionalism with real kindness, but this team absolutely does.

The location made me a little weary, but once upstairs everyone was kind, compassionate, and helpful. I got in for a same day emergency. My two teeth were pulled and they walked me through every step. Very helpful in my time of need.

I took my daughter to Muldoon Dental Arts and the staff were so kind and answered all of our questions. Marvin was so great with my daughter. He made her feel safe and more comfortable when she was a little nervous to get all four of her wisdom teeth pulled. He always has a smile when we go to visit and makes the visit feel welcoming.
